server crash [Sep. 16th, 2007|09:32 am]
[Tags|, ]

Played in a Masters Edition release event yesterday. To put it bluntly, MED sucks as a limited pool. Most of the cards were developed before the theories on limited had been created and the commons just suck compared to the deep pools that have been around since Coldsnap.

My card pool sucked more than usual. Fortunately, on the way to losing my first round, the server crashed. When it came back up around an hour later, my event was wiped out and my tickets were refunded. The cards I got are still there and I'm eligible for a refund. Don't know when they'll give me the refund, though.

--

Sealed tourneys = long waiting times in between rounds. Instead of doing the usual stuff when I'm bored (going to wikipedia or 4chan), I took a hint from [info]kikyou_oneesama's spoiler YM status and caught up with Bleach. That's 40 chapters of the shonen manga cliches in the span of two hours.

PROTIP: It's never "over" in Bleach. So stop saying "It's over" over and over again. -__-

The plot twist in chapter 290 was kinda expected for this story arc. I mean, we've already seen something like that in the Soul Society arc.

--

40 chapters = too short especially with the server crash. 4chan rin pala bagsak ko.

one dream at a time... [Nov. 25th, 2006|10:12 pm]

Pretty boring week at work. Nothing much to say about that.

--

After over a decade of playing this game, I've finally won a Magic tournament.

The catch isn't in the fact that it's an online one (MTGO's level of competition is much higher than paper magic) but the format I won in.

It's a non-rated format called "Momir Basic".

I just played for kicks (it started at 10 pm last night), trying out the tips of the better players in the format. Turns out that their advice was right: just like in the history of Magic theory, tempo trumps card advantage. Attacking with 6 drops is more consistent that waiting out for 9 drops.

I played really well last night. Pro-level.

And I'm not kidding. The deciding games for quarterfinals and semifinals were technically impossible to win, yet I won them both. See for yourself:

Quarterfinals game 3 - the treefolk has swampwalk and can be pumped for 7.

Semifinals game 3 - my own Force of Nature will kill me next turn.

final standings under the cut )

Won 12 packs for the effort. Not as big as a 2x prize, but hey it's still PhP~2500 under the current inflated Thanksgiving selling prices.

Basta lang ma-prove ko na naka-reach na ako ng level ng pro players, pwede na akong mag-quit ulit. One down, 19 online tournaments to go. And 10 paper tournaments. And a pro tour attendance. And represent the country for a Worlds.

A cardflopper's dream... XD

just a short mtg entry...

--

Played in a GP Yamagata Trial today. Went 4-1 and ID'ed in the last round. Missed the top 8 by tiebreakers.

Didn't regret the ID, though, since 9th place still gets 5 boosters and I want to go home to rest.

Made only one major play mistake and a few minor ones in the whole tourney. Just a few notches to go before I get to the local pro player's levels...

EDIT: Direk Mike was hanging around the L5R players so we got a chance to chat. Go rin siya next week, pero hindi niya alam kung saan bababa. Hindi ko rin alam kung ano yung landmark :P

With All Saints' Day coming next week, we cancelled our next draft because people are going on VLs. At least I could go home early next week. XD

Magic Player Rewards for October has arrived in the mail. Got a new DCI card along with the cards.

random stuff [Oct. 18th, 2006|08:49 pm]

I was supposed to write a follow up article on [info]jerk_ministry's post on anime cons (for the sake of non-AME readers, he's the guy who conceptualized "Una kAME!"), but I couldn't find time between work, TS draft practice, and my other project.

--

Finished as the runner-up in the draft practice we held in the office. I had fun playing with morph creatures because they remind me of "Yugioh: The Abridged Series". XD

Next draft will be tomorrow. The draft after that will be held next week, and I'm the sponsor. We'll be playing Rochester draft for a change.

--

Another thing preventing me from writing the article is the shiny thing (blame my ADHD :P) featured in Kotaku, Toribash, a freaking complicated turn based fighting game. Instead of predetermined attacks, you control the muscle groups of your player and create your own attacks.

With all of the muscles plus the effect of gravity to think about, even simple things like punching can take a while to learn (according to the tutorial, the simplest way to do a punch is to twist your chest to the right, contract the right pec, extend the left pec, then raise the shoulder so that the hand will hit the head). But once you master it, you can do all sorts of crazy things as shown in the replays.

Passed the PhilNITS (formerly known as JITSE). My streak of passing all computer science/technology exams hasn't been broken yet. XD

2-2 again, battlefield again... [Oct. 8th, 2006|09:14 pm]

quick update...

--

Played in a Time Spiral release tourney earlier today. Got the usual 2-2 prerelease record. :P

--

Played Battlefield 2142 demo once I got home.

Pretty cool game, but really buggy. I'd have to echo other people's opinions about DICE and EA on this one. Battlefield 2 is still buggy even after all those patches, and now they're releasing a new game? WTF?!?

time spiral... [Sep. 24th, 2006|01:06 pm]

Went to SM San Lazaro today for the Time Spiral Prerelease.

Unfortunately, only 64 slots were available... unusual for a prerelease.

The reason?

520 players attended yesterday's prerelease (counting repeat players). Much more than Grand Prix Manila.

Time Spiral is that exciting.

--

There are a lot of things going for Time Spiral.

First off, it's a nostalgia set. It's set in the planet Dominaria, the original planet where most of the Magic sets take place. Throw in temporal distortion as a plot device, and you've got something that you only see in comics and fanfiction.

Take for example the Ice Age card Incinerate. Anyone who has played Magic back in the day remembers the pyromaniac Jaya Ballard and her one-liners.

She now has a card.

Not only does her card refer to Pyroblast, Incinerate, and Inferno; it also refers to the Spellshaper mechanic of the Mercadian Masques block.

That's not all. Time Spiral also has a gimick: instead of having 11 commons, 3 uncommons, and 1 rare in a booster pack, one common slot is replaced by a "timeshifted" card. These timeshifted cards are reprints with their old card face and a purple Time Spiral logo (probably a reference to the infamous Inquest article). Since they aren't silver bordered and they have the Time Spiral expansion symbol, they are legal in tournaments where the said set is legal.

The list of timeshifted cards is scary. I'm sure some of them will shake up Standard.

And yeah, old artists like Quinton Hoover and Richard Kane Ferguson made new art for this set.

Gastos nanaman ito next month online. :P

--

On the plus side, I updated the Metro Manila map in my head with this trip.

* LRT Tayuman Station added to your map *

* SM San Lazaro added to your map *

* Rotonda FTI jeepney terminal updated for 2006 *

Magic tournaments make me go places I would never normally go. I got as far north as SM Fairview and as far south as Alabang Town Center for tournaments. And I usually go to those places alone. wheee!

mill [Sep. 10th, 2006|12:44 pm]

Sunday. 16 hours of free time. Yay.

--

Been burning downloads to DVDs since last night. I have around 70 gigs of burn backlog so I need to start burning ASAP.

Played MODO when I got tired of reading random Wikipedia articles while waiting for the burns to finish. I don't have tickets so I can't play in tourneys. So I hit the casual room to play some casual games.

Basic etiquette in the casual room is to never play with discard, counter, land destruction or tourney level decks. Obviously, this isn't really followed but since I wanted a challenge, I built a basic R/G beats deck.

After getting an average win-loss record of 8-1, I decided that my deck was still too powerful for the room. So I ditched the deck and created a cheap mill deck with the crap rares I have on hand (Circu, Glimpse). My original intention was to be able to lose to average decks.

Unfortunately, my deck performed better than I expected. The Enigma Eidolons work well with the Compulsive Research and the multicolored cards. I even defeated (a suboptimal build of) the Japanese National Champion's deck.

--

The most interesting game I had today was with a trashtalker.

He starts of by saying he doesn't understand English (click pic for bigger picture).

Then he speaks in English.

Then he starts insulting my deck.

And insults my deck more.

Then he just sucks.

Lessons for the day:
1 - If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are in play, all are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "legend rule." If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesn't apply. (magic comprehensive rules 420.5e)
2 - Don't trash talk if you can't back it up.

Might update again later kung tinopak ako...
